Are growth hormones safe for very young children?

Posted on | August 31, 2009 |

My child is only 4 years old but the doctors have discussed growth hormones. He might only end up being just over 5 ft tall which is really short was wondering if anyone knew anything about these if they are safe or worth it this young.

My wife is only 5 ft tall and I wouldn’t have her any other way. We have three sons and one is only 5ft 3 and quite successful at sport. I am proud of them all. They are not affected by their height because we didn’t make it an issue.

Why would you want to mess with nature? He will still be the same guy if he is 5ft or 6ft tall. There are risks with any drug and that has got to be the deciding factor though. I personally would not want to expose him to the possible adverse consequences of bad reaction.

I’m sorry if this is not what you want to hear but its an alternative point of view.

If your doctor is suggesting it, then I wouldn’t worry. They’re a doctor; they generally know what they’re doing. You could get a second opinion if you want to put your mind at rest.

Growth hormones will only do you harm if you’re not being properly supervised by a doctor and are using them for something other than what they are intended to be used for.

Here is a website that might be helpful.
You need to do a LOT of research on this topic!!
It is extremley expensive, and most health insurance plans will probably find a way to decline the treatment (if it’s even covered) because being short isn’t life threatening in any way. Good luck, and you might want to ask this question repeatedly since the same people probably won’t see it every time.

just over 5 feet is not THAT bad, i know plenty of normal people that bad
my doctor told me i would be 5 feet maximum, but i have learned to live with this
so to answer your question, yes it is safe, but is it worth so much money and stress and pain (remember they are shots EVERY DAY for the kid)-no. To me that it is not worth it just to "fit in" with everyone else

They are safe to an extent but there are always risks and side effects. Speak with your doctor at length and learn about the risks before deciding on a course of action. You have to decide if the risks out weigh the benefits for your child.

    Good luck!
