I had a steriod injection into my shoulder. The actual injection wasn’t that bad, but it really ached for a few hours after. Overall it did help calm my shoulder pain down.

I too, get a kenalog shot yearly for alergies. I only get one, some people get several. It helps so much, it’s like I dont have alergies, which is a great thing for alergie sufferers. but a shot for pain, as you describe, I havent tried. But a co-worker got them ocasionaly for some sholder problem, and said they made him feel a lot better. Taking a lot of steroids is not a good thing, i assume, but if your doctor will give you one occasionaly, i think it’s better than surgery, or feeling pain all the time. I have never tried acupuncture, tho, so I have no frame of reference.
