Posted on | September 8, 2010 |
Within 2 weeks of having my baby, I had already lost 20lbs. WIthin 3 weeks I had lost all the baby weight. Now that he is 2 months old and nursing all day, I am losing even more weight. I eat healthy at home and I will eat fast food at least 4 times a week. I have a very fast metabolism, what can I eat or do to help me gain weight
I am already on the depo shot and havent gained any weight.

Sounds like you’re doing your best. Baby needs plenty of fat, though, and he’ll take it from you if you don’t get it from your food. I know a lot of ladies who would give their right arms for a problem like that.

Talk to your family Dr. and a nutritionist. You want to gain weight the right way.

What are you eating? I imagine if you increased your protein, carbohydrates and fat intake you would gain weight.
Try snacking on nuts, they’re good for you, calorific and high in the good fats.

I had this same problem with my kids, and it’s not all that common, so a lot of people don’t know how to respond. It’s really not healthy to be losing weight that fast. You need to talk to your doctor or midwife to let them know what is happening and ask them if they can refer you to a nutritionist or dietitian, if that is something you can do.
If you go to the MyPyramid site, they have a nutritional calculator to let you know what kind of things you most likely need daily to maintain yourself and breastfeeding. Remember that you need more calories to breastfeed than you did when you were pregnant. If you’re not eating as much as you did when you were pregnant, you’re not eating enough. http://www.mypyramid.gov/mypyramidmoms/pyramidmoms_plan.aspx
Eating fast food four times a week is really not that healthy. Try cutting out your fast food so that you can eat more healthy foods regularly, throughout the week, wherever you are. Eating a more healthy, balanced diet should help you. You may not be getting enough fats/oils (6 tsp/day is probably what you should be aiming for). If you are eating the calories you need and a diverse diet full of all the nutrients you need and if you are drinking enough fluids and are active, even if you are losing a lot of weight, it may be healthy for you. If you’re not feeling well, feeling weak or irritable at certain times of day, or something like that, you may not be getting enough food. It’s very hard to get enough food as a new mom. Maybe asking people if you can come over for dinner or to bring you food could help you in the whole timing of things.
I have to eat what seems like 4 meals per day (mid-sized meals), plus snacks to maintain my weight, and I have a hard time even doing that. You could try adding an avocado/day to your diet, a smoothie with protein and oils, eggs, etc.

I wish I had your metabolism. I could say mean things to you because I’m jealous, but I won’t.
