How to help old rabbits gain weight?

Posted on | September 4, 2010 |

I have old rabbits, and I’ve noticed for awhile now that they are getting skinnier. How can I help them gain weight safely? I feed them pellets and timothy hay, though I don’t think they eat that much of it.

Have you checked them for worms?
    - If they have worms, you can go to your local pet store and buy dewormer. You can even just go there to talk to an employee to see if they can help. Chances are, they will.

How old are they? Sometimes older animals have a hard time keeping weight on. See LINK 3 for older rabbit nutritin.

Those are two things you should take into consideration first.
When was the last time you had them taken to the veterinarian?

You should get them both tested for parasites. If they have any, get them treated for it. A rabbit savvy vet will be able to do the testing and get you the medicine. Parasites can cause weight loss even if you feed lots of pellets.

If your rabbits test negative for parasites or have been treated, then you have to look at their diet. If you are feeding a timothy hay based pellet, switch to an alfalfa one or do a mixture of the two. You can also increase the protein by 1-2%. Adding a bit of alfalfa hay can also help. You might also need to give them more pellets. Start by adding 1 tablespoon per rabbit every few days. Depending on your rabbits, they might need to have free access to pellets to keep their weight up.

Veggies are good to feed, but too many can mean that a rabbit won’t eat the pellets and hay.
