I gained weight on Zoloft. If I switch to another antidepressant will the weight gain likely go away?

Posted on | March 31, 2010 |

I’ve gained 30 lbs since starting Zoloft. It works really well for me, but the weight gain is upsetting. Has anyone who gained weight from an antidepressant lost weight after switching?

As a side note, I do not want to try Wellbutrin because it isn’t supposed to be good for anxiety.

Zoloft made me not care about anything. Sure it masks your depression, but I was taking it for panic and anxiety. It took my will to care about anything. Needless to say I ate what ever I wanted whenever I wanted and gained weight. My nurse practitioner changed me over to Lexapro. I have much more energy during the day. I was even able to go back to work part-time. A few pounds have come off.

Well I was put on prozac 80mg daily for anxiety and I gained 20 pounds in about a year. I tried everything to get it off (even more embarrassing, my undergrad degree is in nutrition), but I couldn’t. My doctor switched me to wellbutrin sr 150 mg (2x daily) and the weight literally shed right off. I’m unsure why you think Wellbutrin isn’t for anxiety, I know plenty of people, including medical and mental health professionals, who use it to treat anxiety. It worked so well for me that I have been able to get down to taking it just once a day instead of twice, and when life calms down for me a bit, I hope to not have to take it at all.
The Prozac made me feel quite comatose, which obviously did reduce anxiety, but the Wellbutrin SR helps me deal with anxiety without reducing my energy, which may be another reason why it helped me drop the prozac weight and maintain a healthy weight now.

I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I’ve been taking that for over two years, and it’s working very well for me.

The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can’t tell I’m taking any medication at all.

There are a lot of people that take Wellbutrin with their SSRI’s, it helps to counteract some of the possible side effects - such as drowsiness, weight gain, and the sexual side effects. It really does make a difference!!

The last time I was in the doctor office, I had lost 8 lbs - not a lot, but in the right direction. I give the Wellbutrin SR the credit for the weight loss, since it does help me to be more active.

Before you give up on the Zoloft, since it’s working for you, is talk with your doctor about adding Wellbutrin SR. That’s at least worth a try. And, you can lower your Zoloft dosage too.
