Lichen planus is an inflammatory disorder, with no known cause, but tends to be chronic with flare ups throughout a person’s life. The usual treatment for this is with a steroid cream. The fact that your cousin had been on steroids for four years, without any side effects, attests to the safety of using steroids. I would certainly not have your cousin on ORAL steroids, but rather on topically applied steroids. There are a few very strong topical steroids which should be able to control her. Make sure that she doesn’t have concurrent hepatitis, which can be seen in some cases of lichen planus.
