Steriod use & Blood Sugar Elevation.?

Posted on | December 31, 2009 |

Knowing that Blood sugars can be raised with Steriod medical use can you tell me if your Pancrea is damaged?
Will Blood sugars return to Normal when Steroid usage stops?
Iam not diabetic. Blood sugars a little high now while I’m on steroids. Was concerned would this injure my pancreas? and would sugars return to normal after steroid usage stops.

Blood sugar can be raised by use of steroids. When steroids are discontinued sugars will drop, but not always to pre-use levels.

My blood sugar was always OK, until I took them, for a back problem and knee problems. Now I have to monitor my blood sugar all of the time, but after 6 months, have been off medication now for 3 years. The doctor’s will tell you that it goes back to normal, I don’t believe that. But I do know people that it did go back to normal. So, maybe the jury is out on that one.

Diabetes, if it remains high, will certainly affect your entire body: liver, cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels), vision, skin, etc. Being that you are already diabetic, your pancreas is already compromised (less function, damaged unless it is diabetes insipidious). While taking steroids it is important to monitor your blood sugar closely and if taking insuling adjust it as your doctor wants it adjusted. Are you on insulin?
