what are the direct effects of growth hormone?
Posted on | July 16, 2010 |
I know it is directly involved in cartilage formation.
I know that it stimulates IGF-1 secretion, which is involved in many anabolic actions in most body cells.
I am wondering what other directs actions does growth hormone have, such as cartilage growth.

In addition to increasing height in children and adolescents, growth hormone has many other effects on the body:
* Increases calcium retention, and strengthens and increases the mineralization of bone
* Increases muscle mass through sarcomere hyperplasia
* Promotes lipolysis
* Increases protein synthesis
* Stimulates the growth of all internal organs excluding the brain
* Plays a role in fuel homeostasis
* Reduces liver uptake of glucose
* Promotes gluconeogenesis in the liver[22]
* Contributes to the maintenance and function of pancreatic islets
* Stimulates the immune system

Like during puberty and helps with growth of bones and cartilage also. but of course there are other things, like minerals,that can effect bone growth.
