What does advair do for a smoker?
Posted on | July 21, 2010 |
I have smoked for about two years and my doctor has recently put me on advair. I know there is a steroid in advair as well as asthma medications and I am wondering exactly what the purpose would be to put a smoker on this. Would this be more a a precautionary measure and perhaps protocal? Would the steriod be able to help the lungs regenerate and is that the purpose of this treatment?

are you having symptoms. It does nothing for smoking but it is given to people with COPD (a disease often associated with smoking). Have you had a pulmonary function test. The drug decreased airway constriction and inflammation. It does nothing to regenerate the lungs. The best thing to do is to quit. The doctor can prescribe some assistance in this area such as NRT (patch or gum), WEllbutrin, and chantrix
Having COPD is not a pleasant disease to get esp at the advanced stages. Just think being attached to an oxygen tank 24/7 and not being able to walk more than 10 feet. It is a horrible death feeling that you are gasping for air.
Best wishes

Searching the Advair site, the med is for asthma and COPD. Your doctor may think you need Advair if he/she thinks you may have either asthma or COPD.
Better not smoking, it will help.

No the purpose is to reduce your body’s response to the smoke related irritation. It does nothing to regenerate the lungs. It’s just trying to manage the symptoms.
